MCNZ registration

Your registration pathway

Your medical career in New Zealand starts with understanding which registration pathway is right for you.

The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) offers several pathways, depending on your qualifications, training, experience and where you trained. Each has its own criteria, and meeting them doesn't guarantee registration.

Start with the official MCNZ self-assessment to see which pathway you may be eligible for, then talk to us about your options.

Comparable Health System Pathway

For eligible doctors with recent experience practising in a recognised comparable health system.

Competent Authority Pathway

For eligible graduates who completed their medical degree and internship in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Australian General Registrant Pathway

For eligible doctors who have completed the required Australian examinations and supervised practice and hold full general registration in Australia.

Vocational (Specialist) Pathway

For doctors with specialist qualifications, training and experience seeking recognition to practise independently within their specialty.

Special Purpose Registration

For doctors coming to New Zealand for specific, time-limited purposes, such as locum work, postgraduate training or research.

Visas

Visas for doctors moving to New Zealand

Eligible overseas doctors may have pathways to work, and potentially gain residence, in New Zealand.

Relocating is a big step. We support you throughout your journey, from finding the right role to preparing for your move, so you can focus on your career and the opportunities ahead.

Straight to Residence Visa

For doctors whose role is on Tier 1 of New Zealand's Green List. A pathway to living and working here indefinitely, and you may be able to apply from overseas.

Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

With a job offer from an accredited employer, start working while you build your future here, with options for residence later.

Bringing your family

Visa options for your partner and children, including work and study rights, depend on your visa and circumstances.
